Raising attitudes and attainment in Maths and English using your PE and Sport funding

With Maths and Well-being being two national priorities, many schools are planning to use their PE and Sport funding and any of their underspend to introduce Active Maths lessons.

It’s where the journey began for me as a Deputy Headteacher. My year 6 children didn’t enjoy Maths and attainment was well below national averages. I used children’s love of movement and being active and introduced simple yet effective Active Maths lessons.

The impact was remarkable with regards to children’s love, confidence and enjoyment of Maths – which in turn lead to engagement and better attainment. In just under 12 months we rose to the top 2% of Maths results nationwide.

In wanting to share this approach with other teachers, I wrote and launched ‘Teach Active Maths’ – a website for Reception to Year 6 teachers with ideas on how to deliver Active Maths lessons – and better still easily do this alongside your White Rose or other planning materials.

It’s now made a difference in thousands of schools of children.

School budgets are so tight – which is why we are delighted to be endorsed as a good use of the ringfenced PE and Sport Funding.
